Microbionet is a privately resourced scientific web site that has the objective of developing a quality microbiological forum of high scientific integrity and providing relevant information which is easily accessed and presented in a highly structured format.

We currently provide a basic level of information in the form of Profiles covering various bacteria. This service will be expanded to cover most species/groups of bacteria and, eventually, a similar set of profiles for viruses, fungi and parasites. This basic level of information will be provided free to any viewer who visits our site.

Additional information presented as a series of Topics for each family/genus/species which will be similar in structure to the current profiles shown on our site will be incorporated into the site. This new information is comprehensive and is available only to members of Microbionet. Dr. Karl Bettelheim has been invited to author the first overview of this series which will be on E-coli.

Also available only to Microbionet members will be the updated VTEC tables. The VTEC table was constructed by Dr Bettelheim at the request of Microbionet. The table has been available to all visitors to our site since it was first posted in 1997. The original table will remain freely available to all visitors, however only members to Microbionet will have access to the updated versions of this comprehensive listing of the Serotypes of Vero Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli reported in the Literature, apart from those belonging to Serogroup O157.
