These are Gram-negative, non-sporing non-acid fast plump rods or cocci. They are generally motile with peritrichous flagellae. They are strictly aerobic and catalase and oxidase-positive. Some species may have yellow pigmentation. They do not produce acid or gas from the usual carbohydrates. There is some controversy of the number of genera in the family. The genus Alcaligenes is the type genus. The genus Achromobacter was part of this group but the term is now not used anymore. The genus Deleya comprise marine species. Genera Alcaligenes: There are currently three species recognized within this genus as well as some as yet not fully classified species. The reconized species are A. faecalis , A. xylosoxidans and A. piechaudii, while other species include "A." eutropus , "A." paradoxus and "A." latus . Only "A." paradoxus is pigmented. All except A. faecalis can reduce nitrate to nitrite and some can reduce nitrite further. The basis of allocating species to the genus is the presence of both an ubiquinone with eight isoprenoid units in its side chain (Q-8) and hydroxy putrescine as the characteristic polyamine.
